Winter Puppet Camp

For ages 8-14.

Started in 2023 as an annual camp, join us over Windham region’s winter break for 5 days of puppet building, play making and show creation as we delve into the magical world of puppets! Under the chosen camp theme for the year, kids will explore basic puppet construction and develop scenes, culminating in a final performance for friends and family. Taught by Jana Zeller and Shoshana Bass.

Camp Teaching Artist Bios

Shoshana Bass is the Artistic Director of Sandglass Theater based in Putney, Vermont on the unceded lands of the Abenaki people. Having been raised in a traveling family of internationally acclaimed puppeteers, Shoshana has spent her life witnessing and in dialogue with artistic voices of diverse cultures, heritages, and perspectives. Now she performs, directs, and choreographs internationally. Recent Sandglass performances include Babylon, Journeys of Refugees; Rock the Boat; Punschi; Oma; and her solo performance, When I Put On Your Glove.

Jana Zeller has been drawing and painting since she was a child. Jana trained for many years as an oil painter and portrait painter, worked as a set painter for the theater, the TV and movie industry, and the opera. As one of the daughters of Sandglass Theater, she began painting puppets, sets and props early on, and later became a working puppeteer creating original shows that have been presented in the US, Canada, Mexico, Germany, and India. She performs and teaches puppetry across New England, and art classes for children in her studio in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Camp Logistics

  • Location: The camp will take place in Sandglass Theater’s own space located at 17 Kimball Hill in the heart of Putney, Vermont.
  • Cost: Camp is $300 per camper for the week.
  • Food: Campers should bring their own water bottle, lunch, and morning snack.
  • Materials: All puppet-making materials will be provided.
  • Clothing: Campers will be moving and crafting and should wear appropriate clothing for both. Please wear warm enough layers for both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Final showing: The final presentation of the campers’ work will be on the final day of camp. Friends and family are invited!
